Let’s look at another five packs of trading cards.
On today’s menu:
Witchblade
I picked this pack up from a comic con years ago – these are cards based on the live action tv show that ran from 2001-2002, which I love because it was weird and unpredictable. The packaging says there may be randomly inserted “Autograph” or “Pieceworks” cards; I have a 1:11 chance of getting a “Quest for Justice” card and a 1:17 chance of getting a “Legacy of the Witchblade” card.
No fancy cards this time, though you’d think St. Joan of Arc would be a “Legacy of the Witchblade” card but it’s not. I’m pleased to get an Ian Nottingham card because I remember he was a pretty cool character. The card in the upper right looks like a puzzle piece card, where you need to collect other cards to put the picture together.
There’s a behind the scenes card featuring Danny, but oddly enough (considering it’s a behind the scenes card) there’s no mention of the actor’s name, Will Yun Lee. I pixelated the text because there are spoilers!
Round-Vernian Vifam
This was an ’80s mecha anime I watched a few years ago that was reminiscent of Mobile Suit Gundam; kids evacuate a colony in a military ship after an attack, and pilot giant robots to fight their enemy. It’s a great show and I’ll talk more about it sometime (after a rewatch). The band Platina Jazz made a jazz cover of the theme song a few years ago that’s worth listening to.
The cards are in a paper wrapper, not plastic, that’s stapled shut. Makes it easier to open, at least!
Only three cards and they’re an odd size (2×2.5″) but printed on nice, thick stock. The colors look good, and the artwork depicts mech battles from the show. And I see there are rock, paper, scissors symbols on the backs of the cards – are these game cards?
Babylon 5: Collectible Card Game
I got this one at a toy show from the nice ladies at the Babylon 5-centric table. These are cards for the Babylon 5 collectible card game, so let’s hope I get something interesting like a character or a starship instead of something boring like a close-up of the floor or someone’s finger pressing a button.
Kosh is one of my favorites, so I approve of the Kosh card, and I do remember the tentacle monster from that one season 1 episode. But other than that…ehh, these are kind of boring. Especially since I don’t play the game and have no interest in it.
I might as well open the other pack I have:
These are about the same as the first pack’s offerings. There are a couple cards with characters I like or recognize – Catherine Sakai and G’Sten…though I had to look him up (he was played by W. Morgan Shepard) – but the rest have pictures of things I don’t care about. Actually, I don’t care about any of these cards, period, even though I’m a fan of Babylon 5. I would have preferred regular trading cards and I thought these would be an adequate substitute when none were available, but they were not.
seaQuest DSV
Another good show. It’s underwater Star Trek! Well, season 1 was at least. And I assume these are season 1 cards because they went all out on the merchandising for that season, then amped down during the later seasons. Which is too bad because a Michael Ironside action figure, for when he was captain in season 3, would have been nice.
Some pretty good cards here. I especially like the Tim Russ one, when he played a hacker that wanted to reform the world or whatever, and the Hitchcock with Crocker card (“Full Frontal Attack”) is nice too.
But this one of Darwin AKA the best character is the clear winner of this pack and all the packs here.
