NFL SuperPro #2: The Killer Instict

SuperPro fights a ninja assassin who has a personal score to settle.

Phil and Karl

A grudge is born

Issue #2

We start with a flashback of our hero, Phil Grayfield, playing in a football game at Notre Dame University. He gets in an argument with an angry asshole teammate named Karl over some football stuff. After the game, while everyone hits the showers and goes home, Karl stares at a notepad full of football jargon and gets angry.

Karl is now the ninja “Quick Kick”

In the present we see that Karl is now a ninja assassin named Quick Kick, and he beats the crap out of anyone who goes against his mysterious mob employer.

Gang Stuff

Elsewhere, we see SuperPro on the prowl – a local football player/stand up community leader named Michael Frazier has been shot and SuperPro is looking for the person responsible. He checks out a warehouse full of gang members and beats them up; they point the finger at the Los Tiburones gang.

Ken and SuperPro

SuperPro checks in with his partner Ken

SuperPro heads to his Sports Inside truck – Ken, his cameraman/partner, is inside. Phil changes out of his costume and the pair heads over to the community outreach center Frazier founded to get intel from the former gang members hanging out there. They say the Los Tiburones gang is in trouble with the mob because of a bunch of weapons they stole, which are now being stored at Schulmann Airport.

The Airport

SuperPro arrives at airport, but Quick Kick is already there beating up Los Tiburones members on behalf of his employer. Quick Kick recognizes SuperPro and reveals his identity, and that he’s still angry after all these years and still hates Phil for the football stuff he did back then.

SuperPro has a reunion with Karl…I mean, Quick Kick

They fight, and Quick Kick tries to escape on a little plane full of the stolen weapons. SuperPro warns Quick Kick that the plane’s wing is damaged, but it’s too late and it crashes into the ocean.

Is this the end of Quick Kick?

Elsewhere on a cruise ship, we see mob moss Sanzionare – Quick Kick’s mysterious employer – and he’s very angry at SuperPro foiling his plans.

Thoughts

I was a bit surprised when I started reading this issue because I was expecting a direct continuation of issue #1, with SuperPro/Phil trying to clear his friend’s name. Instead, we get a brand new story – albeit one that still had a connection to the villain Sanzionare.

I liked how Quick Kick had a personal connection to Phil, but the fact that he hated him for a football thing he did a few years ago was pretty poor motivation. The fight itself was also not as interesting as I had hoped. It was teased all issue and when it finally happened, it went by too quickly. SuperPro keeps going through low tier villains, but I guess its fine. He is a low tier hero, after all!
