I wouldn’t have seen that ending coming in a million years! I was sure that Mary would turn out to be a robot, what with those strange glimmers in her eyes. But no! This story turned out to be…science-fiction tragedy. It reminds us of the risks that intrepid scientific researchers undergo every day as a regular part of their work. (Compare the story “Temps mort” by George Langelaan, for a similar account of the perils of speeding up or slowing down time.) —Mary’s list of accomplishments, listed by the Professor, reminds me all too well of announcements of awards at various end-of-year functions. How happy am I to be done with them! —Having first displayed his usual apparent cynicism, Carl then finds himself giving one of the pep-talks regulars on a series are sometimes required to give to other characters on the show. Which is the true Carl.? Will we ever know?
