The ghost of pirate captain Redbeard raids a bunch of freighters owned by some business guy. The Scooby gang investigates.
At the Malt Shop, the Scooby gang reads that freighters belonging to business mogul C.L. Magnus have been raided by ghost pirate Redbeard. The gang heads over to pay C.L. Magnus a visit and ask questions, but a suspicious butler refuses them access.
The gang resorts to sneaking in pretending to be room service delivering breakfast. “At 11 o’clock at night?” asks the butler. “Sure, that way you don’t have to get up in the morning to eat it.” says Shaggy.
A mishap ruins the gang’s disguises, but C.L. Magnus still grants them an audience. He says that Redbeard has it out for him because his ancestors were the ones who brought him to justice many years ago. The motive here is good old fashioned revenge.
Ghost Ship Cometh
The Scooby teens head out in a speedboat, playing a recording of boat noises so they sound like one of Magnus’ freighters. The ghost ship appears but collides with the speedboat, ripping it in half; the gang manages to board the ship, but are now split into two groups: Fred, Daphne, and Velma in one, Scooby and Shaggy in the other.
Scooby and Shaggy immediately get caught by pirate goons and are brought to Captain Redbeard. He wants them to walk the plank unless they’re prove themselves useful – they say they’re good cooks and he orders them to make him something delicious.
They decide to make a stew fit for a ghost, containing seawater, chains, ashes, cobwebs, and soap. Redbeard forces them to eat it, and the soap in the stew makes them blow a million bubbles that they use to cover their escape.
Welcome to Skull Island
The ship makes it to Skull Island (like from King Kong?), Redbeard’s base of operations; Fred, Daphne, and Velma reunite with Shaggy and Scooby.
Fred asks to see Shaggy’s paper hat (which he used in an earlier scene to fool the pirates) and it has schedule of Magnus’ freighters.
The gang then finds a room with all the stolen cargo from the ships. The pirate ghosts show up, a chase ensues, then the ghosts are caught. Turns out Redbeard was really C.T. Magnum!
He knew his business was doing badly so he stole cargo from ships to sell. What a jerk. And the other pirate ghosts were just some dudes. No one important.
Not a bad episode. Surprisingly some good jokes; I thought the stew scene was kinda funny. The episode does slow down a bit once it moves to Skull Island and I started to lose interest during the chase scene when everyone just messes around with all the random cargo stuff.
Fun fact: the character designs of all the pirate ghosts were reused in the first Globetrotters episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies (only they were colored all-white).
