Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Episode 32: A Star is Born

October 9, 2017 Leave a Comment

A caterpillar monster traps the Rangers in a cocoon as Bulk and Tommy audition for a commercial.

Episode Summary

Bulk and Tommy compete for a spot in a martial arts commercial; in the school hallway, Bulk trash talks Tommy, who, in return, yanks off Bulk’s scarf and taunts him with martial arts moves. If this was your first exposure to Power Rangers, you might think Tommy’s the bully here.

The rest of the Rangers hang out on the beach, where they’re attacked by Scorpina and a group of Putties. A centipede-like monster traps all the Rangers in a cocoon.

They escape and summon their zords to fight and destroy a random baseball monster. Then the centipede monster grows and the Rangers go through the same song and dance again.

Scorpina

Scorpina is up to no good, as usual

In the last scene, everyone watches the martial arts commercial in the juice center – both Bulk AND Tommy made it in the commercial, as the before and after.

Thoughts

Some of the humor actually worked in this episode. Bulk’s crazy audition where he throws a stack of papers in the air to punch and kick was hilarious. And I liked the beach scene with Skull accidentally spraying a battle’s worth of sunscreen onto Bulk, then slathering mayonnaise on his body. Sure, it’s a variation of the “Bulk gets a pie to the face” gag, but it was great. Maybe I’m getting soft.

The fight scenes, on the other hand, had disjointed pacing – especially the two (!) separate Megazord fights. Most of the original footage from Zyuranger‘s centipede monster episode was unusable because it had a lot of unmorphed fight scenes. But the remaining footage could have been edited a little better. It felt like one of this season’s early, nonsensical episodes.
