They say actions speak louder than words, but sometimes noises can be louder than actions. Captain Picard made a lot of noise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, both figuratively and literally – this time, let’s focus on the latter.
1. (awkward laugh) – The Naked Now
Known in some circles as the “Beavis” laugh; invoked when the inebriated Dr. Crusher got a little too close for comfort.
2. (gasp) – Where No One Has Gone Before
It’s a gasp made out of three separate noises!
3. “Mmm-mmm” – Skin of Evil
Standing up to a powerful creature that just killed his security chief. This is the first time Picard really kicked ass in the show.
4. (scream) – Night Terrors
What is it with Picard’s hallucinations involving the turbolift? Unlike the previous example, it’s fear that generates this noise, not surprise.
5. (scream) – Chain of Command, Part 2
In this powerful episode, Picard screams several times – each sounding more pained than the last.
6. (laugh) – Tapestry
Relieved to be stabbed, personal timeline restored. An iconic moment.
7. (scream) – Timescape
He screams a couple times this episode but with this first one, Stewart does a good job of selling the pain of having one’s fingernails grown at an accelerated rate.
7. (laugh) – Timescape
Timescape gets two entries in this list? Yes it does.
8. (grunt) – Liasions
Another example of Stewart effectively portraying pain; sharp, immobilizing pain in this scene, to be specific.
9. (grunt) – Star Trek Generations
Picard is a philosopher, not a fighter, and his high-pitched, hoarse grunts reveal how out of his element he is.
10. (yell) – Star Trek: First Contact
All that pent up rage released with a primal scream.
The only thing that would make this better is if each photo was actually a video file of the sound itself. Or a .mp3 file that we could click, or turn into a texting sound. Or put all of them together for a ring.
DOOOO EEEET.
That’s a good idea and I might actually do this!
