An eccentric old scientist uses his knowledge of Leader X’s identity to blackmail his way to the top of Galactor.
While betting on horses at a race track, Jinpei and Ryu meet a kooky old man – a roboticist named Dr. Henjinman, who’s created a cyborg horse that he can control by twisting a button on his jacket.
Later that night, Henjinman is abducted by Galactor; Katse wants to use his technology to make more cyborg horses for the good of Galactor.
Henjinman figures out who Leader X is upon seeing him, and threatens to expose his secret identity unless he’s made leader of Galactor. Leader X acquiesces, much to Katse’s annoyance.
Henjinman doesn’t give a shit about Galactor, though. He just wants to use their resources to rule the world – a world of cyborgs and cyborg horses or whatever. As soon as Katse realizes this, he presses a button to turn on some bright flashy lights that fatally wound (?) Henjinman.
Galactor unleashes a group of goons on cyborg horses to attack a city, but they’re thwarted by the Science Ninja Team, who learn their weak spot from the dying Doctor Henjinman. Rest in peace you crazy old man.
I’ll start by saying the cyborg horse threat did nothing for me. Again, I always like it when Gatchaman does something different – something besides a single giant mech – but this just didn’t work for me. I mean, just look at them!
What did work was the eccentric Dr. Henjinman. That guy was entertainment central and totally carried the episode; I’ve rewatched it a couple times just for him. I also liked the tease that Leader X is more than what he seems. I dig these kinds of mysteries.
